Description

This presentation will summarise the role of tidal dynamics and mangrove restoration as a NbS in coastal environments. The presentation will initially focus on the historic research that led to the provisioning of ecosystem services in the coastal zone, including flooding amelioration, water quality benefits, carbon sequestration, erosion protection, wave attenuation, and other services. After discussing the evolution of the scientific research, the presentation will highlight the current state of science and broad-acre implementation case studies in Australia and the broader Oceania region. Finally the presentation will detail Project Halo, a new project in the Pacific, which aims to harness the power of nature-based solutions in natural and manmade environments.

Sustainable Coastal and Estuarine Development

The main aim of the Sustainable Coastal and Estuarine Development specialist group is to advance the application of coastal reservoirs and tidal basins technologies to the world at large, where water and energy security can be significantly enhanced while sustainability of the coastal and estuarine ecosystem is taking into account. The objectives are:

  • Promotion of coastal reservoir and tidal basin technologies for water and energy security, and urban and agricultural development across the world’s coastal regions
  • Develop sustainable technologies for coastal end estuarine restoration.
  • Development of manuals of design and operation practice of coastal reservoirs and tidal lagoons
  • Research and disseminate information on the environmental and ecological aspects of coastal impoundments
  • Conduct regular conferences and webinars and advocate adoption of coastal reservoirs and sustainable estuarine restoration
  • Develop and edit a new IWA Journal on “Sustainable Coastal and Estuarine Development”
