IWA is pleased to announce the results of the fourth edition of the Climate Smart Utilities Recognition Programme. The 2025 edition placed a special emphasis on low- and middle-income countries, highlighting the vital contributions of water and sanitation utilities operating in resource-constrained and climate-vulnerable settings to adapt to and mitigate climate change.

The application window closed in October 2025, with a total of 48 applications received from 25 countries around the world*, highlighting a broad outreach of the initiative. The submissions represent a diverse range of utilities facing both common and context-specific challenges.

Following a robust review process involving seven jury members, 18 applications have been recognised as Climate Smart, representing notable examples of climate action to be shared internationally with the IWA community. Of these, three were considered outstanding by the jury for their inspiring and ambitious actions in their local contexts.

A unique recognition opportunity

The fourth edition of the programme offered an enhanced recognition opportunity for utilities, helping broaden participation and raise awareness of the mitigation, adaptation, and leadership potential within the sector.

The outstanding applications were invited to attend the IWA Water and Development Congress & Exhibition in Bangkok, Thailand, 8-12 December 2025, with IWA sponsoring the travel costs of one representative from each selected utility. This provided an invaluable opportunity to engage with the international utility community at the Utility Leaders Forum, deliver technical presentations, exchange practical solutions, and navigate the complex challenges facing utilities today. The recognised utilities were honoured during a formal event at the Congress.

Follow the Climate Smart Utilities Initiative and be updated on more opportunities for utilities. We invite you to join the discussions on our community of practice page on the IWA membership platform, IWA Connect Plus.
